The 26th annual Salon International du Design de Montréal (SIDIM) is upon Montreal once again this weekend, with more than 300 exhibitors and an anticipated 17,000 design aficionados heading to Place Bonaventure from May 22 to 25.
Featuring two days of events for those in professional trades and two days open to the public, the SIDIM is a chance for all kinds of disciplines in Montreal’s design world to check each other out.
“The common denominator is design,” says Ginette Gadoury, the co-president of Agence PID who helped establish the SIDIM in 1989. She’s hoping to see 20,000 people come out to Place Bonaventure this weekend, and explains this year’s edition is “a little mix of old and new.”
What’s brand new for the 2014 edition is a dedicated kitchen and bath area in Bonaventure, featuring the likes of local industry leaders such as Vanico Maronyx.
Select venues in the greater Montreal area will also participate in the design weekend, as SIDIM in the City will see over 50 locations beyond the Bonaventure exhibition hall showcasing their design street cred. The external venues include bakeries, galleries, hotels, spas and restaurants.
Those showing at the SIDIM have been handpicked, says Gadoury, and the selection of companies and designers is a homage to the Quebec design milieux. [Shameless editor’s note: Come see Movato Home at Booth 620!]
“One of the aims is to create a network of creators and clients or designers and suppliers [where] people get together at an event and get inspired,” said Gadoury. “The more dynamism in a profession, the more people are willing to participate in it.
“When we talk about design, we talk about all types: interior, industrial, graphic, fashion… [Designers] are also working together and becoming multidisciplinary. We encourage that approach.”
The SIDIM is taking place May 22-25 at the Place Bonaventure Exhibition Halls, 800 rue de la Gauchetière W. Tickets are $20 ($15 for seniors and students).
