Hot Trends in Home Design: 2014

What better way to usher in a fresh, new year than to surround ourselves with the latest in home designs and welcome trends that are forecast to make waves in 2014? Here’s a look at what’s ahead:

1) Mixing Metals Gold, pewter and copper are hot right now, and mixing them with silver or chrome conveys rich, effortless glamour. The metallic look works best if you can create repetition throughout your space and find ways to arrange more than one piece in a room.

2) Vintage Pieces Digging through Grandma’s hand-me-downs or scoring one-of-a-kind pieces at flea markets can be a find for any room. Everyone loves interior pieces that are unique and original – and no one has to know how little they can cost. Combining vintage and contemporary looks creates a lively, interesting space that will leave everyone asking, “Where did you get that?”

3) Black Walls While it may not be the trend for everyone, we will definitely be seeing dark walls in 2014. Try it sparingly – on one wall or in one room – to create a grand statement rather than painting the entire house black.

4) Purples and Blues With Radiant Orchid named Pantone’s colour of the year, there is no doubt it will be featured frequently in 2014. Fresh and vibrant, small doses of this colour can energize and breathe new life into a home. Colour experts also predict that we will see a lot more blues too, as well as warmer, complementary shades of yellow and orange.

5) Curves and Circles While there is a perennial return to straight lines in architecture and design, 2014 will see a move toward a curvier, more organic approach to interiors. There is something about curves that evokes a carefree, relaxed ambience in a room. Curved seating especially encourages us to sit closer and have a conversation.

6) Chevron and Wide-Plank Flooring Laid out in the classic, zig-zag pattern, chevron and herringbone will be as popular as ever this year, as more people are willing to commit to flooring with character. The trend in floor colours also seems to range between light beech and medium walnut tones. Wood floor planks have also become noticeably wider lately, with recent styles reaching widths of up to seven-and-a-half inches.

7) Bold Graphic Prints Bold graphic prints are coming onto the design scene in full force this year. They’re showing up in tiles, rugs, pillows, art and other home accessories. This trend is an evolution of the tribal prints we’ve seen in the recent past.
