Let Vintage Pieces Tell the Story of YOU

Lately, I have become obsessed with vintage pieces. Be it furniture, sculptures, lamps or other interesting finds, if it speaks to me in some way, I have to have it — even if it means not buying the latest design trends due to my dwindling bank account.

Luckily, I am a treasure hunter. I prefer to find pieces at flea markets, online or while on vacation rather than frequenting high-end vintage shops with steep price tags (although if you can afford it, why not?). I find vintage items special because they are unique, usually solid, and were well-made before North Americans began producing everything overseas.

There is also something personal about adding a piece to your home. Perhaps it reminds you of that trip to Spain or the day you and your husband went to the flea market and found that amazing sculpture you know nothing about but had to have because it reminded you of something you saw at a museum in Paris.

In talking with clients and friends, a recurring issue people have in designing their home is that they have collected a lot of items, some of which they love but are afraid could be outdated or not worthy of displaying anymore.

If you really love something, never be afraid to display it — even if it is not the latest design trend! Our homes are a reflection of our lives and should tell the story of who we are and where we come from, not a furniture showroom with little personality.

Sometimes, we may need a little help putting all our treasures together to create a cohesive, uncluttered space. If you are fortunate enough to hire a designer, be sure to choose one that “gets you” and doesn’t try to purge everything that still holds a special meaning. A great designer will be able to arrange your prized pieces in a way that displays them in their best possible light, while also editing and adding a touch of newness to give your space a more polished, curated look that is still 100 per cent you.

Don’t pack away your old vintage pieces.  Let them fill your home with special memories that tell the story of you.
