Trend Talk: Decorating with Terracotta

The 90’s are back, but don’t go breaking out your neon clothing just yet…

Influential terracotta colour tones are making a spectacular comeback in our fall decor of 2014, however, with floors, tiles, paint and wall colours taking a cue from this trend. Terracotta can be bright and exciting, or soft and comfortable, with a wide variety of shades being perfect for fall decorating.

Here are some tips when decorating and designing with Terracotta this season:

Use it as a statement piece: Terracotta is traditionally regarded as being the colour of tiles or potted plants. Instead, think bigger by painting your kitchen cabinets in this gorgeous pop of colour.

A gorgeous warm ceiling: Painting your ceilings in terracotta will make it feel warm and cozy. A coloured ceiling adds interest where none existed. If you’re going to paint the walls dark, it is a nice surprise to find the ceilings dark too.

Terracotta tiles as a stunning kitchen feature: Warm glowing colours and a rustic feel: this is what is achieved when terracotta tiles are installed on the floors. It can be a hand-in-glove compliment to a white kitchen and instantly adds a sense of history to a new build.

Use terracotta as a base colour for furniture: Contrary to popular belief, terracotta does not always need to be an accent colour. Used as an upholstery fabric, it can make a great jumping off point for fresh white or blue accents. Orange and blue are also complimentary colours and work confidently in almost any space.

There are many amazing shades and variations of terracotta. Enveloping your space with this colour can create mood and drama and can be paired with more neutral accents.

Potted plants and succulents: After a long summer, it is time to change the pots of your indoor plants. Paying attention to new seasons with a pot ‘remix’ is a great way to add seasonal flair to your home. Terracotta pots can be painted, stencilled, wrapped and transformed to any desired look — but terracotta is a classic.
