Spring Trend: Pastels

Spring is looking SWEET. Watch this season’s colours literally lighten up with pale pastel hues that are easy on the eyes.

The warmth of a soft sunlight yellow, the breeze from a chalky blue sky, the muted mauve of a field of lavender and the dusty pink of a bouquet of roses all offer serenity. These gentle shades are also perfect to inject sweetness into a room, while creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. Spring is all about sunshine and fun, so it’s a great time to try out these happy hues.

But before you plunge into pastels, see my tips below on how to utilize these gorgeous colors to create a super stylish and versatile scheme:

1. Pastels create the perfect backdrop. Painting a room with lighter shades can make the room appear larger. Pale pastels act as an excellent backdrop for introducing other tones and giving you an opportunity to experiment with contrasting colors. Using one pastel in place of white can add a soft, unexpected boost of color to a room.

2. Pair pastels with white. Adding pastel colours to a crisp, blank white canvas will allow the colours to stand out and become the focal point of the room. Solid block colours or pastel patterns create sassy shout-outs of interest. A pastel scheme works best when teamed with neutral tones and pale timbers to create a light airy space.

3. Mix pastels with vibrant shades. Pastels look fabulous against small bursts of brighter colours. Play up pretty pastel shades by contrasting them with neon brights or metallic to give an edge to those softer colours. Brights look great against a pale or chalky grey.

4. Create a monochromatic colour scheme by introducing varying shades of a single colour against a neutral backdrop. A pastel colour scheme doesn’t have to include all the colours of the rainbow. Selecting just one or two pastels and using multiple tints of those colors will create a clean, elegant scheme, which is restful to the eye – especially with green or blue hues.

5. Keep it simple, but experiment. The secret to making this look work is not to overdo it. Keep things mellow and light by adding subtle touches of colour to create balance and harmony. The easiest and most cost-effective way to test out this trend is by changing small things around your home such as painting a wall or introducing new accessories. Try adding some scatter cushions, an area bound rug, bench or ottoman, wall art and a couple vases of pretty pastel flowers.
