Elegant Walks on the Wild Side

René Desjardins’s design inspiration entered the room one day in the form of a female client’s outfit. The wearer, one half of a couple moving to Westmount from the suburbs, was dressed in a cashmere coat and a soft-grey cashmere sweater and skirt. Around her neck, she wore a pink and violet silk scarf. The playfulness of that colourful fashion accessory set against a conservative and classic outfit inspired Desjardins to blurt out, “That’s the house!”

The interior designer kept that sartorial image in his head and used “elegance with sunny little touches” as his leitmotif throughout the extensive renovation of the couple’s four-storey, grey-stone home. The classical elegance of the 1920s property, with its extensive mouldings, grand staircase, high ceilings, desirable position on Mount Royal, and the white and grey palette became a canvas for some bold colours, and vibrant and audacious art…
