When warm weather arrives, most people prefer to be outside as much as possible, making an outdoor space more than just a garden. Today, gardens are multi-purpose areas that reflect personal interests and personalities, and are often used for the same activities that take place indoors. A garden can serve as a much-needed retreat that – when well-designed and decorated – can increase a home’s usable space.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll categorize the backyard by letter, with an A to Z guide  full of smart and stylish outdoor decor ideas, along with useful garden elements.

Did we miss something? Tweet your photos and ideas @MovatoHome! And use this backyard bible to transform your outdoor area into a relaxing personal sanctuary that can be enjoyed all year ’round.

H – Herb Garden: It’s so satisfying to raise your own fresh produce. We think herbs are an absolute must for the garden. Imagine being able hand-pick salads and herbal teas. Herb gardens don’t require a lot of space and can be grown in an assortment of quirky pots.

Tip: Create a visual feast by growing your garden in unusual containers. Why not try to produce strawberries in an up-cycled handbag, a cheap pair of rain boots or vintage biscuit tin? Grow a whole salad in an old wooden desk or your favourite herbs in a tea pot, mug or watering can. Create an urban terrace orchard using an array of coloured baskets, beach buckets, or terracotta pots, all of which make fun plant holders.

Miss our last post from this A to Z guide? This guide is full of garden goodies, great ideas and practical solutions to help you create a summer-ready outdoor retreat.
