Light is a powerful element in our life. We feel great on sunny days, down when it gets dark outside, yet there’s a difference if the night is illuminated by the romantic light of the moon.

I look at lighting of any given space in the same way.

People use lighting to suit personal lifestyles and tastes, basing their choices on the knowledge of what is available on the market and on how the particular space is used. Even though each one of us is an individual with different tastes and needs, lighting can be discussed in four universal applications.

In order to feel comfortable in any space, all of the four elements of light purpose must be mixed.

Lighting to perform visual activities: There are many demanding activities that require functional and efficient light in order for us to perform them comfortably and without restraining our eyes. Reading, preparing food, grooming and cleaning can be uncomfortable if the light source is not serving its purpose. It’s ideal to employ the option to dim or switch off the light source when we want to have more relaxed and cozy ambiance around us.

Lighting to enhance the décor of the space: Decorative pieces used to enhance a space are generally a focal point that stands out in its design. Those fixtures may be just as functional and give a very efficient light output, and/or, add a decorative touch with a light output that creates an ambiance.

Lighting to insure safety and security:  I’m not talking about exit signs. Nowadays, LED lighting is used to illuminate pathways, entries, stairs and halls. Properly applied lighting helps to prevent accidents and is critical for safety in some work areas that involve dangerous tools.

Lighting to create ambiance: It is very important to have the comfortable, controllable light settings that can change depending on the mood we are in.  If the lighting is correctly placed, elements of lighting are properly mixed and controls have been suitably installed, you shouldn’t have any problems creating a desired ambiance.

As an expert contributor with MOVATO Home, my future columns will cover common issues and advice to create perfect illuminations in any space.
