As the summer nears its end and school will soon resume, now is the time to refocus and get serious about work — and what better way than to re-decorate our home office?
Even if you don’t spend all day there, having a beautiful home office should be a necessity. The office is often the last place people tend to think to decorate, frequently becoming the “messy” room behind the closed door. All it really takes are a few tweaks to make your home office come to life with personality and style.
Here are a few simple changes you can make that will transform a dull workspace into a cozy, elegant room that you will be inspired to spend time in.
A Bright Idea: Lighting is probably the most important part of any design, especially when it comes to the home office. Having a window is great for flooding daylight into the space, but you will still need some light to work when the sun goes down. Instead of a “builder’s basic” fixture or recessed lights, why not create some excitement by adding an interesting chandelier, lamps or a wall sconce?
Roll out the Carpet: Rugs are a great way to create instant coziness in any space. Incorporating one into your home office design is a must. A nice rug not only defines the area, but it also keeps your feet warm. If you don’t have a large area, opt for a cowhide rug, which provides visual interest.
Bookworm: Even if you don’t read a lot, just placing books around the room can create a sense of sophistication and warmth. Who knows, it may even inspire you to pick them up more often! Display the books neatly on nice shelving, or add some great sculptural book ends and decor for even more appeal.
Picture this: It could be a large painted canvas, a framed print, a gallery wall or even an interesting wallpaper or giant mural: art is one of the easiest ways to create a statement and add personality to any space — the office should be no different! If you don’t have a large budget, there are many stores that sell affordable art. You can also find prints that are a fraction of what the original piece would cost. Here’s some more inspiration.
Take a seat: Okay, someone needs to finally say it: unless you work from home and sit in your office chair for eight hours a day, you do not need to have a typical, task office chair. Although there are some nice brands out there that make sleek-looking utility chairs, usually they look bulky and out of place in a home office. You can find a chair that fits into your design scheme that is also comfortable to sit in for a few hours a day. Replacing a typical office chair with something more design-oriented can give the whole room a different feel, and that will make for a more inviting space to work in.
