With another season upon us yet again, why not embrace the change and incorporate some stunning new looks into your living space?
Here are 10 fresh designer trends for fall:
1. Light coloured wood: The overall theme we’re seeing this fall seems to inch closer to natural and neutral colours. Dark-coloured wood gives off a heavier look, while a refreshing, light-coloured wood won’t drag a space down. Honey-tones are the popular choice we’re seeing for wooden furniture, but other tones to consider are walnut, oak or cherry.
2. Fur Hide: As fall approaches, spaces decorated with fur throws and rugs creates a warm and cozy atmosphere. A fur hide is a great addition to a room with a modern, minimalistic look as the accessory provides a rustic, natural feel to an otherwise chic and cool environment. It also looks great with wooden furniture, and can make the house more inviting as the days grow cold.
3. Floral decorations: Floral designs have always been a staple for walls, carpets and accessories, but the trend this fall is to keep these floral patterns smaller and confined within well-defined spaces, such as couch covers or curtains. Little accents around the house can also make big statements. The age of overbearing flowers is over, so be sure not to cover everything with large-scale prints.
4. Metallic Ceilings: During a redecoration, the ceilings are often forgotten or painted in a mediocre white. One of the bolder trends we’re seeing this fall is the metallic ceiling look, which changes the whole mood of an office or living room. A toned-down metallic or brass ceiling can give an interior that classy, antiquated look without being overpowering.
5. Navy Blue: Blue has been all over design magazines, runways and interior colour options this year, but this fall navy blue has gained mass favour. An easy place to start incorporating the season’s “it colour” is in accessories: find a blue vase and cut flowers; add a navy pillow to your bedroom; find small areas to highlight, light an accent wall. Accessorizing in navy can change the atmosphere in a room, and won’t be a big investment if you fall in love with another trendy colour come winter…
6. Ethnic decorations: Add an exotic vibe to a dull-looking room with ethnic decorations and patterns. The look often incorporates natural materials and interesting patterns that blend well in both neutral and bold spaces. Why not put down a Peruvian carpet? Fill an African-inspired vase with flowers? Finally hang that painting from a trip to Thailand? The contrast of ethnic designs can gives an exciting ambience to a room, so you’ll never be bored.
7. Turquoise: A variety of blues and greens are dominating interior design palettes this year, but the colour turquoise is back on the scene in a big way. A cheery colour, turquoise has a classy, bold look and effortlessly brightens up a space. Remember that deep and saturated turquoise makes for a better statement than the paler shades.
8. Indoor/Outdoor Look: Quite literally, nature is back in. Furniture that used to be exclusively for the outdoors is increasingly making its way inside this fall, and the fine line between outdoor and indoor furniture seems as hazy as ever. Having a dining room decorated in this trending theme will make you feel like you’re at a picnic every day.
9. Is it Black and White? This fall, there has been some evolution to the classic black-and-white interior design look. Taking the edge off the harsh contrast, the hues this season are softer and calmer on the eyes, creating a more relaxing room, while still retaining that cool-city look that many minimalists desire. It also matches nearly all furniture and is always a great change away from beige.
10. Comfort: Following the trends is all good, but it’s experimental as well. The best trend is to know what you like, what you’re comfortable with and what colours give you positive energy. Black might be chic but may not be a colour you feel at rest with. Flowers might look pretty but maybe you don’t want them in the bedroom. This is what experimentation is for! Try different colours, designs and decorations. Move around furniture you already own. The best trend of all is to make yourself feel at home.
