Hello Andrew,

Have you ever used vanilla extract in your paint to reduce odours? If so, how much should be used for a gallon of BEHR paint? Also, will the vanilla extract discolour neutral colours?

Great question!

I have only ever used vanilla extract in oil paints, never in latex.  If you are going to use latex-based paint and are worried about the VOCs (volatile organic compounds), I strongly recommend a low- or no-VOC paint. Lucky for you, every major brand has them.

For oil-based paints, use vanilla extract to mask the smell by simply pouring a full 60ml bottle of extract into your gallon of paint and stir it in.  It will reduce the smell and will not discolour your paint. It’s important to remember, however, that the fumes in oil paints are harmful and simply masking them with a more pleasant scent won’t reduce their harmful effects.

When painting in either latex or oil, remember to ensure your workspace is well ventilated. As an extra precaution, I recommend you wear a 3M dual cartridge ventilation mask from the 5000, 6000, or 7000 series. This mask will protect against harmful organic vapours.

Hope this helps!
