Hi Andrew,
I am having trouble choosing colours for my daughter’s bedroom. I have the perfect colour in mind for her duvet cover, but she wants something completely different! Help!
Choosing colours for a child’s bedroom is difficult because it’s the only room in the house that they feel is theirs. The bedroom can show a unique expression of your child’s personality and sense of style. Starting at an early age, children already have a unique sense of style and fashion – and they are eager to express it!
My suggestion would be to make your daughter feel like she’s a part of the process and decision making. Have a discussion about her favourite colours, as well as which pieces of furniture are staying or going. Finally, place the duvet cover on a table outside of her room in really good light and discuss the colours she is attracted to and which ones stand out to her. Taking the duvet cover out of her room will allow her to be more objective. Place some colour samples on top of the duvet cover and choose one or two that really stand out and one or two that are subtle, but present.
At this point, you should have all the ingredients for your paint and colour selection – a bold and dominant colour scheme with subtle and complementary accents. Your daughter will feel empowered by the process and you will have a colour scheme that works for the both of you!
Good luck!
