Dear Andrew,
My husband and I are in the process of choosing colours for the exterior of our cottage/home. It is a large home and the exterior has a wood ‘board and batten’ finish. Any suggestions?
Amanda
Traditionally, when choosing colours for the exterior of a home, I consider the colours that are already present. The colour of the shingles, bricks and mortar, as well as the colours of other existing homes in the neighbourhood, are all inspiration.
Also, bear in mind that in cottage country, nature rules. So be sure the colours you choose complement the beauty that already exists around you.
With this in mind, may I offer some bold suggestions. First, the size of the house and its architectural features offer you flexibility. For instance, I recommend you use black as the main colour of the board and batten. Black has an amazing ability to ground a space, especially if it’s divided and varied. Bold, dark colours also make a space seem smaller and, in this case, more intimate. Choose a black stain in a matte finish to allow other features of the home, such as the front facade and the garage doors, to really pop with a natural and soft gloss finish.
White windows and a neutral roof will complete the palette.
It sounds like a beautiful spot. Enjoy!
